Understanding the Assignment
Wrapped in community and forged in the crucible of the Northern Pacific Ocean.
With no stopping points, no crew, and no external advice, the SHTP is a race like no other in the world. Some sailors compete for the podium. Others embrace the mere challenge of sailing across an ocean alone. Some are struck by the spirituality of the Pacific, and seek to connect with nature. Regardless of what drew you here, there is no wrong way to enjoy the SHTP.
In the true spirit of soli una — Latin for "alone together" — competitors and support staff gather online and in-person to share strategies, equipment tips, weather concepts, and safety requirements. Getting to the starting line is the most challenging part of the race. And, despite being a singlehanded race, no one arrives at the start without help.

Tree Time
Once in Hanalei Bay, finished competitors, race committee volunteers, and visiting friends & family gather daily at sunset for snacks and beverages. This tradition has been held under the same tree by Hanalei Beach every race year since the first in 1978.

Hanalei Bay, Kauai - Hawaii
Hanalei Bay is located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The bay remains an active anchorage during the summer, while the prevailing wind blows from the south to keep boats facing the shoreline. While there are no services available, there is a small shalllow river inlet where inflatable shore tenders can be tied up. This provides easy walking access to the small town with groceries, shops, and restaurants.
